When I set out to write the first edition of this book, I had just gone from being hyperthyroid to hypothyroid -- quite a difference! I interviewed many endocrinologists, researchers, and patients and put that knowledge, as well as my own experience, into the information in my book.
Now, in the second revised edition, I have been able to revisit what I wrote and learned, as well as add to the material, in a new and exciting way. There has been more research in many areas of thyroidology, as well as new developments in who treats hypothyroidism and how. Specific areas, such as heart disease and hypothyroidism, and aging and hypothyroidism, are being looked at by researchers and clinicians -- and the expertise and information they're gaining is wonderful for those of us who are living day-to-day with the disease.
As with the first edition, the second edition of "The First Year: Hypothyroidism" is set up almost like a diary -- taking the patient through the first year of living with hypothyroidism, from diagnosis to the 12th month. There are special sections for coping with the emotional toll hypothyroidism can take on a patient and his or her loved ones and co-workers, the financial aspect of living with a chronic illness, the role of the medical team, and managing weight, diet, and exercise through the first year. In the second edition, I've added several areas for coping with multiple chronic illnesses, too -- a subject that I've learned even more about since the first edition was published.
Although there are some who will disagree with my balanced, medically-friendly approach to hypothyroidism, I believe it has worked best for me and many, many other patients. As with any kind of medical condition, we must receive competent, thoughtful medical care and be honest, forthright, and kind to ourselves, too!
I hope this book will help you, as the information in it has certainly helped me!
